Outbreak – Materiel Battles – Western and Eastern Fronts
1914 to 1918: the word of the 19th century is annihilated on the battlefields of Europe. This DVD of educational films is the prelude to a three-part documentary on the "primal catastrophe" of the 20th century.
The main film deals with the political causes as well as the protagonists and arenas of the first years of the war. In six modules we present complex, often controversial aspects of WWl - such as the new dimension of violence and the war in the East. Topics are also integrated with art and literature which lend themselves to a transdisciplinary approach.
Such experts as Gerd Krumeich (University of Düsseldorf), Jörn Leonhard (University of Freiburg) and Jörg Baberowski (Humboldt University of Berlin) explain the new dimensions of the First World War and address the current discussion revolving around the question of guilt. Diaries and letters from the field provide an insight into the hardships of life at the front and in the homeland.
