Confessional Age and State-Building
Not only does the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia put an end to the Thirty Years' War, but also to the confessional age with its religious wars. The epoch of Absolutism begins: the process of nation-building in Europe. This DVD is the prelude to a two-part film documentary that presents the political and social developments on the path towards a modern state.
The main film questions the concept of Absolutism and sheds light on the formative developments of this era: the development of state structures, the pompous spectacles of the rulers and the key role of religion in the expansion of power. The modules address aspects relevant to teaching: the domestic and foreign policies of Louis XIV, Colbert and Mercantilism, the art of the Baroque using the example of Gianlorenzo Bernini, and the social outcasts of the time: the Jews and “witches”.
Exciting and instructively told, with many maps, graphics and expert interviews, our films are perfectly suited for history lessons and for all those interested in history.
